You may worry about your heart or diabetes if you're packing on a few extra pounds. But a new study finds that extra weight also contributes to disc degeneration in your spine, particularly in the lumbar region.

In the study, published in Arthritis & Rheumatism, researchers studied more than 2,500 adults and found that disc degeneration tended to be more common, more severe, and more extensive among overweight or obese participants.

"Losing weight definitely helps reduce pressure on the spinal discs," says Dr. Donald Reilly, assistant clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School.

Strengthening your spine

The spine is a stack of bones called vertebrae. Collectively, they are the spinal column. In between each of the spinal column is a fibrous disc. These discs keep the bones from grinding against each other. They are like little pieces of cushion placed between two fancy plates. Over time, the discs themselves suffer wear and tear. When they start to degenerate, they can become "slipped" (or herniated). That means the discs can press on the nerves in the spinal cord and cause pain.

"The spine is stabilized by muscles that run up and down in back of the vertebral column. These muscles keep the spine erect when other forces, like the weight of the body and lifting, cause the spine to bend forward. Since most of the body's weight is in front of the spine, the spine is constantly being bent forward," Dr. Reilly says.

When the spinal muscles go to work, they keep the spine erect. Unfortunately, they also generate high compression forces that wear down the discs. This, in turn, leads to the disease called spinal stenosis, which is essentially arthritic change in the spine from the collapse of the disc.

Strengthening tips

"Abdominal muscle or core strengthening helps by supporting the efforts of the spinal muscles," says Dr. Reilly. He recommends sit-ups and side bends as simple but helpful core-strengthening exercises you can do at home.

However, if you have a medical condition that makes these exercises difficult, consult with your doctor or a professional trainer educated in working with individuals with back pain. And if you currently experience back pain, but have not had it evaluated, explain your symptoms to your Chiropractor in Miami Beach. Many sources of back pain can be relieved without major surgery, through changes such as weight loss, exercise, diet, detox and chiropractic therapy instead.
