"An examination (of Harvey Lillard) showed a vertebra racked from its normal position. I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced, the man's hearing should be restored. With this object in view, a half-hour talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever, and soon the man could hear as before. There was nothing accidental about this, as it was accomplished with an object in view, and the result expected was obtained. There was nothing crude about this adjustment; it was specific." Dr. Daniel David Palmer - Sept 18, 1895 Harvey Lillard was a Janitor who happened to be working in the same building as Dr. Palmer, in Davenport, Iowa. Dr. Palmer was studying there, trying to understand the cause and effects of different diseases. Mr. Lillard was bent over under the stair with back problems. He had back pain and hearing problems for over 17 years from working in a mine. Dr. Palmer examined him, and found a lump on Mr. Lillard's back. He suspected that vertebrae might be "misaligned" and pinching a nerve connected to Mr. Lillard's ears. Dr. Palmer adjusted Harvey Lillard's back with a gentle thrust, moving the misaligned vertebra back into its natural position. Mr. Lillard excited as his hearing improved instantly and he could hear sounds from the street below. Dr. Palmer needed to adjust him over a series of treatments to the point that his hearing was completely restored. News of this event spread quickly and was unfortunately over exaggerated. Miracle stories were very commonplace, and soon to follow was controversy in regards to chiropractic. Palmer coined the term "Chiropractic" by combining the two Greek words for hand and practical, and together the words are interpreted as "done by hand." Two years after curing Harvey Lillard, Dr. Palmer opened the Palmer School for Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. Today there are 18 accredited colleges of Chiropractic and over 50,000 practicing Chiropractors. Chiropractors receive scientific training very similar to students in medical school. REFERENCES|| 1.
