| How can Chiropractic improve the function of your Immune System? |

Introduction The sympathetic nervous system appears to be a common mechanism for the immunoregulation induced at least by humoral responses triggered by autoimmune and alloimmune antigens (Sterin-Borda, Cantore, Pascual, Borda, Cassio, Arana & Passeron, 1986; Sterin-Borda, Cremaschi, Pascual, Genaro & Borda, 1984). A specific association of Class I H-2 molecules with sympathetic receptors has been shown (Cremaschi, Borda & Braun, 1984). Following the uninterrupted flow of mental impulses from brain to organs the body will function to full capacity. We will also show a reciprocal steric relationship between brain and body. Stimulation of the immune system will inevitably occur. Natural killer cells play an extremely important role in the immune system, and associated resistance and elimination of virally ifected cells. In 1975, Ronald Pero, Ph.D, chief of cancer prevention research at New York's Preventive Medicine Institute and professor of medicine in Environmental Health at New York University, began developing scientific valid ways to estimate individual susceptibility to various chronic diseases. An individual's immune system responsiveness, or "immune competence," also was directly linked to certain DNA repairing enzymes, which provided an objective way to assess disease susceptibility. Pero was also fascinated by the synergistic relationship between various hormones with other cancer inducing agents to promote disease. If thyroid produces too much of either thyroxine or thyroid stimulating hormone, cancer risk greatly increases. The nervous system regulates hormone balances; it too can influence susceptibility to cancer. Along these lines, various kinds of spinal cord injury are accompanied by a high risk of developing cancer./font> Joseph Flesia, D.C., chairman of the board of directors from the Chiropractic Basic Science Research Foundation, collaborated with Pero in 1986. Measuring 107 individuals who had received long-term chiropractic care, Pero's team determined that all chiropractic patients were "genetically normal"; they had no obvious genetic reasons for increased resistance or susceptibility to disease. Using Pero's test to gauge resistance to hazardous environmental chemicals, they hypothesized that people with cancer would have a suppressed immune response to such a toxic burden, while healthy people and people receiving chiropractic care should have a relatively enhanced response. The chiropractic patients had 200 percent greater immune competence than the people that had not received chiropractic, and 400 percent greater immune competence than people with cancer or other serious diseases. Despite a wide range of ages the immune competence did not show a decline with age. The effects of chiropractic seemed uniform for the entire group. The efficacy of chiropractic care in the field of somato-visceral disease processes has been demonstrated by several practioners over the past two decades. In 1991, Patricia Brennan, Phd., et. al. conducted a study that demonstrated that chiropractic adjustments enhanced the phagocytic respiratory burst of polymorphonuclear neutrophils and monocytes.w25 Statistical analysis T-test for unpaired values will be used to determine the levels of significance. Differences between means will be considered significant if P <- 0.05. Disscussion There is a bidrectional pathway between the central nervous system and the immune and endocrine system. A well documented modulatory pathway exists between the hypothalmus-pituitary-adrenal organs. Various hormones have been reported to alter a number of immunologic measures; growth hormone, prolactin, and thyroid-stimulating hormone. The nervous system provides a pathway for information to flow from the brain to the immune system. Cholinergic receptors are present in thymosin-producing thymic epthelial cells and beta adrenergic receptors have been identified on lymphocytes. There is also much evidence supporting the neuronal projections originating in the brain innervating a number of immunologic tissues such as bone marrow and the thymus. Natural killer cells, a subgroup of thymus derived T cells, have the ability to kill certain tumor cell lines and virally infected cells. Low numbers of NK cells have been associated with various autoimmune diseases. Decreased absolute numbers of NK cells have been found in patients with clinical psychiatric depression, in patients with chronic headache, and people who have difficulty handling the stresses of everyday life. B cells will be enumerated by direct immunofluorescence using Stimultest T and B Cell reagent in which the B cell monclonal antibody, anti-Leu-12 (CD 19), is conjugated with phycoerythrin and the T cell monoclonal antibody, anti-Leu-4 (CD3), is conjugated with fluorescein. T and NK cells were enumerated by indirect immunofluorescence with the murine monoclonal antibodies anti-Leu-4 (CD3) and anti-Leu-11b (CD 16). Fluorescein was conjugated with goat anti-mouse IgG was the second antibody. After staining, each cell preparation was examined with a Zeiss phase contrast fluorescence microscope equipped with epi-illumination. Results Effect of life flow upon immunization. Chiropractic care may enhance any genetic abilities you may have. References
